Title: "Rain or Shine" (2024, Edition of 3, Intaglio - Line Etching). Statement: I’ve long had a fascination with these umbrella streets—they’ve been the subject of some of my past works because I think they’re really beautiful and interesting. For this piece, I focused on the fact that, while umbrellas are meant to protect you from the rain, I often see photos of these streets under the sun; providing shelter from both rain and shine. |

Title: "Floating" (2024, Edition of 6, Intaglio - Line Etching, Aquatint). Statement: Using the same plate from a previous print, “Rain or Shine”, I’ve transformed the umbrella street into a floating umbrella river. What once was a clear sunny day becomes a quiet night sky reflected upon the surface of a stream. |

Title: "16-years-old in 91 measures" (2024, Edition of 7, Intaglio - Line Etching, Multi-Plate Printing). Statement: This piece is a printed replication of my personal sheet music for Cait Nishimura’s Chasing Sunlight: a piece I played with my high school band in the tenth grade. In this piece, the musical language acts as imagery—bar lines, note heads and musical markings provide context of the song and set the mood; the melody is longing and hopeful, with a rise, a climax and a gentle fall. Then, the annotations provide context and interpretation—aggressive circling, added dynamics, notes for “MORE!” and “LOUDER!” scattered throughout the music, dictating the flow of the melody. For this work, I wanted to challenge myself with a word-/symbol-heavy piece; in the previous works, I had little regard for the fact that the print would end up reflected. I wanted to challenge myself to not only replicate words backwards, but also musical language—and doing such with precision and respect to the original type/script. |
